Stems and leaves sparsely strigillose. Outer phyllaries glabrate. Flowering Aug-Oct. Dry open slopes, rocky places, sometimes along streams or seeps, in meadows, open pine woods, margins of dry woods, grasslands, disturbed soils. Usually fewer stems in stand and flowers than S. wrightii.
